Understanding Atrial Fibrillation (AFib)

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) can be scary for many patients. Like any other muscle in our body, the heart is under the control of electricity. AFib is an electrical storm causing the top chambers of the heart to move too fast. In many instances Afib is considered to be secondary to atrial dilation and stretching of the heart. This results in loss of proper contraction of the top chambers and stagnation of the blood. Atrial fibrillation can also cause rapid heart rates that can create an uncomfortable and scary feeling for most people. Please talk to your physicians if you feel bouts of irregular heart beat or experience rapid heart rate.

Other Common symptoms include:
